Summer Camp 2018

Oatland Island Summer Camps are week long day camps available to incoming kindergarteners through incoming 8th graders. Campers will discover the fascinating world of science through hands-on activities, creative crafts, and wildlife investigations. Wolves, eagles, and cougars are just a few of the native wildlife species on exhibit along our 2 mile nature trail. Living in their natural habitat, our animals provide up close and safe observation for field studies and creative inspiration. Enthusiastic adult instructors, most of whom are certified teachers, bring a wide range of experience and talent to enhance these camp adventures. Join us for a week of exploration and discovery your child will never forget!

WHEN

June 5, 2018–July 17, 2018
Weekly camps run Monday through Friday, beginning at 9:00AM and ending at 3:00PM. Earliest drop-off is 8:30AM! 

EXTENDED CARE

$135 for each week of camp.
This fee also includes a camp t-shirt that must be worn each day of camp attendance. Additional t-shirts are available for purchase at orientation.

TUITION

3:00PM–5:00PM $40/week
Extended Care must be prearranged and fees paid at time of registration. Cancellation refunds are not available for Extended Care.

Incoming Kindergarten & 1st Graders

Amazing Animals
Animals, animals, everywhere! Large and small, rough and smooth, furry and feathery! Come to Oatland for an animal extravaganza! Campers will learn through stories, crafts, and up-close observations that animals have similarities and differences that make each one special!

Fun on the Farm
From the sheep’s wool to the cow’s milk, we will investigate Oatland’s barnyard bunch. Learn how chickens and owls are alike and how goats are similar to bison. We will learn all the fascinating facts about farm animals and how they are important in our everyday life.

Little Critters
Tiny little worlds alive with tiny little creatures exist right in your own backyard. Let’s see what amazing things you can find by learning where to look. We’ll find creepers, crawlers and swimmers as we turn logs in our forest and look closely into the tidal creek. A week of discovery waits for you in these wonderful small worlds!

Let’s Be Sense-able
What sounds do animals make? What do they feel like? Can they see and smell? Join us for a week of outdoor exploration and sensory discovery using your five senses. Through stories, crafts and lots of outdoor hands-on fun, you will learn that animals have senses, too.

Home Sweet Home
Campers will explore Oatland’s many habitats where the big and furry, creepy and crawly, and fun and feathery call home. They will learn about a different habitat each day and about the many different kinds of animals that live there.

Science Magic
Using everyday objects and products, your little scientist will create scientific magic! Through experiments, crafts and explorations, campers will discover just how sensational science can be.

Upcoming 2nd and 3rd Graders

Predators
Do you hunt by day or stalk at night? Are you fast, quiet, sly or venomous? Explore the world of the hunters – the predators that live among us. Wolves, owls, spiders and more are waiting for you to start your adventure!

Wild and Wildlife
Where do our wild animals live? What do they eat? When do they sleep? Why do they do the things they do? Learn about Georgia’s native wildlife by observing them up close all week. The alligator, the opossum, snakes and owls will become your friends this week at Oatland!

Wetland Investigations
Five days of hands-on, feet-wet fun! Our many regions of Georgia provide wetland habitat that is vital to our native wildlife. From our freshwater springs in the mountains, down rivers and through swamps, we arrive at the coastal salt marshes and Atlantic Ocean. Come prepared to get in the sand mud, and muck to find out what lives there and why.

Nature Creations
Let Oatland natural world awaken your creative talent! It’s a full week of drawing, painting, designing and crafting! Get naturally motivated by the native plants and animals of our coastal environment while creating unique pieces of art inspired by Oatland!

Slithery and Scaly
Explore the cold blooded world of reptiles and amphibians as you become a herpetologist for the week! Is it a frog or a toad? Turtle or tortoise? Alligator or crocodile? Join us for this week of reptilian fun!

The Mad Scientist
Hands on experiments and steady observations explain some of nature’s most fascinating features. Create some of your own fascinating effects as we learn about the life, chemical and physical sciences in this week of science madness!

Incoming 4th and 5th Graders

The Tide Comes in!
The Georgia salt marsh… our tidal world that lies between the land and the ocean. Shrimp, crab, oysters and fish are only a tiny part of what this fascinating world produces and supports. We’ll examine it, get in it and explore it up close to find out why this wonderful ecosystem is the most rich and valuable place on earth.

Scientist for a Day
Have you ever dreamed of being a marine biologist or astronomer? A chemist or paleontologist? Spend a week with us and become a different type of scientist each day. From fossils to frogs, bugs to bison and plankton to planets, you will discover the amazing world of science in a new way each day.

Survivor!
What would you do if you were lost in the wilderness? What would you eat and how would you find water? Could you build a shelter and a fire? Could you find your way out? Spend a week learning fundamental skills and techniques that would help you survive in the extreme situation of being lost in the wild!

Incoming 6th-8th Graders

Coastal Expeditions
From coastal salt marshes and maritime forests to sandy beaches and waves… Georgia’s coast is a treasure-trove of beauty and diversity. Explore our precious coastal ecology with field trip to various sites to study the plants and animals that call these places home. (Additional fee of $25 required for additional supplies and activities.)

Fiber Arts
Dive into the world of fibers! Felting, spinning, rope-making, and weaving are just a few of the traditional fiber techniques waiting to be explored. Campers will craft and create their own fiber pieces to keep and share. Connect with your creative mind and open a whole new thread of artistic expression! (Additional fee of $25 required for additional supplies and activities.)

All About Oatland
Become an official Oatland ambassador! Through hands-on activities and real life scenarios, campers will gain a deeper understanding of the educational values of Oatland’s nature trails and animals. Experience the daily responsibilities and obligations required to maintain this place called Oatland! From animal care to Oatland’s history, you will be able to share your knowledge with the public to enhance the visitor experience. This program is designed to introduce our younger students to our year-long volunteer/internship program for highschoolers.

FUNdamentals of Beekeeping
Catch the buzz! Become an Oatland Beekeeper as you discover the fascinating world of the honey bee! Learn how to build and care for a hive as well as collect local honey as you realize the honeybee’s valuable significance in our daily lives. (Additional fee of $25 required for additional supplies and activities.)

Volunteer and Community Service Opportunities
Dependable volunteers help make our camps succeed in quality and efficiency. We are looking for enthusiastic young adults at least 14 years of age to join in the fun again this year! Each weekly session needs volunteers as Junior Camp Counselors to help supervise campers and assist with camp activities. You may volunteer for as many weeks as you like, dependent on available space, and you will receive community service credit for your time! Please consider being a part of the Oatland team this summer!
